The cause for celebration: Wawa’s landmark 250th location that offers gasoline services.

The ribbon was cut at the new store on New Road and Ocean Heights Avenue at 10 a.m. with help from Mayor Jack Glasser and Police Capt. Mike Boyd. Afterward, everyone was invited for free coffee, cake and samples of Wawa hoagies for the rest of the day.

“This is great,” said general manager Andy Holman. “Opening a brand-new store is very exciting.” Holman said that replacing the old store with an all-new store with gas pumps was the right move for the company and one that offers added convenience for customers.

He said concerns that the new store might cause congestion at the busy intersection of Bethel and New Roads have been addressed.

“I don’t think the flow of traffic will be a problem,” he said.

“The city changed some traffic patterns and everything has been running smoothly this morning.”

The new store required 20 additional positions, bringing the total employed at the store to 50. Associates were greeted on Friday with a pep rally following the grand opening ceremony.

“It really brings people together,” said Christine McCarthy, Wawa communications and events specialist. “We’re like a family here, and we like to do something special for our associates to get them excited for this new store.”

McCarthy took charge of the microphone to ask Wawa trivia questions and tossed the company mascot, Wally Goose, beanbags and T-shirts to an enthusiastic group excited about their first day of work.

The store features a new interior layout and color palette, and up to 12 cars at a time can gas up at the pumps.

By WILLIAM KELLY

SOMERS POINT – For more than 40 years, motorists were guided by Tony Mart’s giant rooftop neon arrow from the traffic circle in Somers Point to Bay Avenue and a small strip of nightclubs where early rock ‘n’ roll history was made.

Now, only a historic marker acknowledges they were even there.

Today, the building at the site of the legendary Tony Mart nightclub sits empty, boarded up and overgrown with weeds, with no real development plans on the horizon. But for decades, from 1944 to 1982, it was one of the hottest nightclubs on the East Coast featuring six bars, two dance floors, major recording stars, rock ‘n’ roll bands on two stages and a line to get in.

It’s been a quarter of a century now since “Eddie and the Cruisers” was filmed there as a last hurrah before they demolished the place, but people just won’t let the good times go.

The uncertainty of the present situation doesn’t detract from the history of all the good times, which will be celebrated at a Tony Mart’s reunion beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at American Legion Post 352, First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Somers Point. There will be live entertainment, dancing, good food and T-shirts.

There have been other Tony Mart reunions. The first was in June 1986 at Ego’s, the club that replaced Tony Mart. It featured The Band, which played at Tony Mart’s in the summer of 1965 as Levon and the Hawks. A 10-year reunion was held at Omar’s in Margate, and last September the 25th anniversary of the filming of “Eddie and the Cruisers” was celebrated at Stumpo’s.

“I knew we were going to have a reunion, but I just realized it was 25 years,” Tony’s son Carmen Marotta said at the party.

During Tony Mart’s final few summers, Marotta would often set up a barbecue pit in the parking lot in the afternoon and share ribs and pork sandwiches with friends and passersby. That’s what this reunion will be like, with locally renowned chef Richard Spurlock, whose father ran the Bay Avenue barbershop, cooking up the grub.

Although the music will be provided by bands that never played Tony Mart, Billy Walton, Jacque Major, Bobby Fingers and the Mainline Horns certainly exemplify the type of music that Tony Mart was known for during its 40 years in operation.

Walton is one of the hottest young guitarists playing today, and recently opened for Major at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.

Fingers is considered the best sing-a-long piano player in these parts, and the Mainline Horns will certainly round out the proceedings.

“Tony Mart’s is remembered and is famous for rock ‘n’ roll,” Marotta said, “but actually a broad spectrum of music was played there – big band swing, Dixieland jazz, rhythm and blues and rock ‘n’ roll.”

For Marotta, 52, who grew up at Tony Mart’s, the place is part of his earliest memories.

“[I remember] running around there as a child, playing with the bouncers and musicians, eating cherries, drinking Cokes and just being there,” he said. “I can recall things from 1961 or 1962, when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I remember the Fall Guys playing ‘Alabama Jubilee’ and ‘Tiger Rag,’ and doing the Sunday night Showtime, when they would do a Dixieland Southern type of show, dance on the bar and play ‘When the Saints Come Marching In,’ in sort of a mummers kind of way.”

While the memories of Tony Mart are still strong, and all of the old nightclubs are gone, the music remains. Marotta, as a member of the city’s cultural commission, helps book the acts for the Friday night beach concerts and the Good Old Days picnic, which continue the popular Tony Mart’s musical traditions.

Tickets to the Tony Mart’s reunion are $12. For information call (609) 653-6069.

MAYS LANDING – An Atlantic County jury convicted a 46-year-old Atlantic City man for obtaining a driver’s license using his former roommate’s identity, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said Monday, June 9.

On March 31, 2004, Edwin Patillo applied for a duplicate driver’s license under the name Leon Hopewell at the Cardiff Motor Vehicle Commission in Egg Harbor Township. In addition to the photograph taken as part of the application process, Patillo submitted a birth certificate, social security card and an ATM bank card, also under Hopewell’s name, said Assistant Prosecutor Curt Baker, who handled the state’s case.

Baker said the identity theft was discovered when Hopewell, who is 48, went to get his license renewed at the end of July 2006, and Patillo’s photograph was under Hopewell’s license. An investigation was conducted by the MVC and the Prosecutor’s Office.

After a four-day trial and approximately one hour of deliberations Monday, the jury convicted Patillo on all three counts: using personal identifying information of another to obtain a driver’s license, a second-degree crime; tampering with public records, a third-degree crime; and falsifying records, a fourth-degree crime, Baker said.

The investigation revealed that Hopewell lived with the defendant in Atlantic City from 2002 through 2003. While there, Hopewell had his mail sent to the address. He also had his personal identifying documents, Baker said.

On Sept. 11, 2005, Patillo, who was in a motor vehicle, was stopped by Pleasantville Police and initially identified himself as Leon Hopewell. Subsequently, Egg Harbor Township Police Detective Sidney Terrell searched items from the motor vehicle and found a hospital security badge with Patillo’s picture on it, and a Commerce Bank card, a Social Security card and a birth certificate, all in Hopewell’s name, Baker said.

The defendant faces 10 years or more at sentencing. Superior Court Judge James Isman is scheduled to sentence Patillo July 11.

By STEVE PRISAMENT
Staff Writer

ABSECON – Fire Chief Butch Stewart said that a marsh fire along Route 30 Tuesday, May 27 that filled the sky with black smoke was caused by a cigarette tossed into debris that had washed up in the flooding from a storm two weeks earlier.

Smoke from the late afternoon fire off the westbound lanes of the highway could be seen for miles, Stewart said. Rush hour traffic was blocked for a while.

According to Stewart, a discarded cigarette ignited plant material and other debris that was cleared from Route 30 after the flooding from the unusual May nor’easter that struck the area Monday, May 12, causing power outages, flooding and road closings throughout the area.

“It was a freak storm,” the chief said. “Bay garbage came up onto the roadway. The state came in with plows. They cleared off the roadway.”

The material sat out and dried in the sun, while the wind kept it from going back into the bays, he said.

“All it is is grass,” the chief said. “Somebody flicked a cigarette. Then with the wind, it started a fire some 30 feet from the road.”

He said it wasn’t difficult to extinguish, being that close to Route 30.

“But they were out there for a half-hour or 45 minutes,” Stewart said. “They had to turn it all over. As it was, it could only burn to the bay.”

He said it was lucky the fire was on the north side of the roadway.

“On the other side it could be a life hazard,” Stewart said. “There are motels and other structures.”

He said it could also have been a problem if the fire had been far from the road, where firefighters wouldn’t be able to get to it.

“As it was, Mother Nature took care of it,” he said. “She has strange ways, but most of the time she takes care of her own problems.”

The way the wind and the tides work, he said, nature seems to maintain a balance even with human intervention.

“Most of the time it’s mankind that makes things go wrong,” he said.

To comment on this story
email steve.prisament
@catamaranmedia.com
