Ventnor teen killed, six others hurt as SUV rolls

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – A Ventnor teenager was fatally injured Monday night after the SUV he was driving with six passengers aboard rolled multiple times on Schoolhouse Road. Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Cormick McMann, 18, of Ventnor was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer eastbound on Schoolhouse Road at 10:34 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29 when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Somers Point-Mays Landing Road. Five juveniles and one adult were passengers in the SUV.

Instead of stopping, McMann attempted to negotiate a left turn onto Somers Point-Mays Landing Road while traveling at a high rate of speed. The maneuver caused the vehicle to roll multiple times before striking a tree, police said.

McMann, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.

Six occupants were transported to area hospitals.

McMann, who sustained critical injuries, was pronounced dead at 3:35 a.m. Tuesday morning at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division.

Police said the SUV was en route from an Egg Harbor Township home, where witnesses stated the occupants had been consuming alcohol, to Absecon Island at the time of the accident.

The Scullville Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene in addition to the Egg Harbor Township, Hamilton Township and Northfield ambulance squads.

The crash is under investigation by Sgt. Charles Super, Ptl. Steven Swankoski and Ptl. Kevin Devlin from the Egg Harbor Township Traffic Safety Unit and Sgt. Keith Fane and Investigator Kevin Hinks from the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
