DOT announces Route 52 Causeway lane closure
SOMERS POINT – The state Department of Transportation has announced that the right southbound lane of the Route 52 Causeway in Ocean City and Somers Point will be closed from Sept. 16, 2008, through May 2009.
Route 52 northbound will maintain two travel lanes, while southbound traffic will be limited to one lane. Two southbound lanes will be available during designated holidays.
The closure will enable the DOT to continue its replacement of the Route 52 Causeway. DOT is currently replacing 1.2 miles of the interior portion of the 73-year-old causeway from Elbow Island to Garrett’s Island. In April 2008, DOT opened the new northbound bridge.
The old causeway is being demolished to provide space for the new southbound roadway, which will be completed by fall 2009.
DOT has installed variable message signs on the Garden State Parkway, Route 52 and Route 559 to inform motorists of the lane closure and other traffic impacts. Real-time travel and construction information is available online at www.nj511.info.
