Girl, 2, drowns in backyard pool
PLEASANTVILLE – A 2-year-old girl drowned in an above-ground swimming pool Wednesday afternoon after she wandered away while her grandfather tended to her 4-year-old sister.
The girl, whose name was not released by police, was pronounced dead at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City campus, said Duane N. Comeaux, Pleasantville Police Chief.
The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. Aug. 6 when the victim’s older sister fell out of a chair but wasn’t seriously injured, Comeaux said. While her grandfather tended to her, the younger girl slipped out of his eyesight and left the house. She then entered a 4-foot, above-ground swimming pool in the back yard.
Her grandfather and her mother, Carla Cruz, found the girl a short time later and immediately called for an ambulance, Comeaux said. The mother was in a different section of the house in the 200 block of Doughty Road.
“It wasn’t a long time,” he said. “And they tried to resuscitate her after they found her.”
Comeaux said parents need to be careful to watch their children.
“That’s very hard to do,” he said. “I raised two children, two girls. Trying to keep an eye on them isn’t easy. You have to watch them at all times.”
There have been no charges filed, Comeaux said. The incident remains under investigation.
The case was the area’s second in two days that involved a toddler found unconscious in a swimming pool.
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, a 2-year-old boy from the Cardiff section of Egg Harbor Township was found unconscious in a 3-foot inflatable pool. He was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden for treatment.
