Pleasantville officer indicted on theft charges

MAYS LANDING – An Atlantic County grand jury has indicted a Pleasantville police detective for allegedly stealing money and jewelry from a defendant following the execution of a search warrant in July 2007.

It is further alleged that Detective Charles Oglesby, 39, of Egg Harbor Township, falsified a police report in February in an effort to cover up the theft.

Oglesby was indicted on two counts of second-degree official misconduct, one count of third-degree theft by failure to make required disposition, and one count of third-degree tampering with records Tuesday, July 22.

The 12-year veteran of the police department and has been on suspension since March, Prosecutor Ted Housel announced.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor James McClain presented the case to the grand jury Tuesday afternoon. The indictment was handed up to Superior Court Judge James Isman.

The Official Corruption Unit of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office with the assistance of the Pleasantville Police Department began an investigation after allegations of the theft were brought the attention of the Prosecutor’s Office.

Second-degree charges carry a sentence of five to 10 years in prison. Third-degree charges carry a sentence of three to five years in prison.
