EGG HARBOR CITY – Zoom, zoom, zoom on by to Egg Harbor City this weekend, car enthusiasts!
The city will host its fifth annual Antique and Classic Car Show 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 19 near the intersection of the White Horse Pike and Cincinnati Avenue.
The rain date for the event is Saturday, July 26.
Last year, the event drew more than 1,000 people to see more than 400 entries, co-event organizer Elwood Solomon said.
“We had a lot of people stop by last year on their way to the shore,” he said. “Everyone loves antique and classic cars.”
For this year’s event, Gambardella’s Racing and Performance Parts will have on display one of its dragsters, which is sure to be an attention grabber at the annual event.
Solomon, a long-time city police officer, and Bill O’Brien, owner of O’Brien Funeral Home and co-event organizer, are classic car enthusiasts that started this event because they wanted to use their passion for cars to make a difference.
Solomon, 61, owns a 1965 Ford Thunderbird Landau, a 1963 Ford Thunderbird Convertible Roadster and a 1968 Ford Thunderbird Landau with suicide doors.
O’Brien owns a 1965 Chevy Impala Super Sport.
Throughout its existence, proceeds from the event have gone to national and local non-profit organizations. This year some of the proceeds will go to the American Heart Association, Breast Cancer Association, and the Egg Harbor City Crusaders Youth Athletic Association.
Revenue from a previous year’s event also allowed for event organizers to purchase a $2,000 water fountain for Lincoln Park.
“We are not trying to make money,” Solomon said. “This event is for the community. Everything we make we spend it on the community.”
Meanwhile, trophies will be awarded by category; a dash plaque will be given to the first 150 entries.
Judges will be provided by the Crusin’ Classics Club in Hammonton. Judging will take place at 2 p.m.
There will be live entertainment by “Who Dat,” a southern New Jersey-based band, and vendors will be selling anything from hot dogs and hamburgers to performance parts.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle and T-shirts sold at the event sporting a logo designed by students at the Fanny D. Rittenberg Middle School.
Vendor slots start at $35. Dash plaques will be given to the first 150 entries. The registration fee is $17 the day of the event.
Pets, bikes, skates, and boom boxes are not permitted at the event.
