Police investigate suspicious object at airport

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – A report of a suspicious object early Tuesday morning, June 17 closed off a small portion of the Atlantic City International Airport for about two hours.

At 8:10 a.m. Egg Harbor Township police responded to the airport for what turned out to be construction equipment described as a scissors lift.  After it was delivered, the Transportation Security Administration did a test on the equipment and came back for a hit for nitrates.

The TSA requested a bomb dog; Egg Harbor Township Police K-9 Officer Ken Marchelle, who is assigned to the airport, responded with his partner Axel.

Axel indicated a positive four times on the same spot of the equipment.

The Atlantic City Bob Squad responded and processed the construction equipment, deeming it safe and nonthreatening.

A thorough investigation revealed a small amount of fuel oil spilled in the battery compartment of the machinery.

There were no flights arriving or departing during this time so there was a minimal effect on airport operations while a section was closed off as a safety precaution.

The New Jersey State Police also assisted with the matter.

Police said Delta Line, which owns the lift, was contacted to remove it and did so without incident.
