22-year-old convicted in hotel robberies

MAYS LANDING – A 22-year-old Atlantic City man was convicted on 12 counts including robbery, aggravated assault and weapons offenses in connection with a robbery in Egg Harbor Township in April 2005, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said Friday.

The jury came in with a guilty verdict against John Johns Jr. 6 p.m. Thursday, May 29 after about four hours of deliberations, said Assistant Prosecutor Seth Levy, who handled the state’s case during the seven-day-trial. The convictions include two first-degree armed robbery charges, two aggravated assault charges and two charges of firearms possession.

On April 24 of 2005, Johns robbed the Econo Lodge and on April 25 the Ramada Limited, both in Egg Harbor Township, taking approximately $2,100 from the Econo Lodge and approximately $900 from the Ramada, according to Levy.

He was arrested at 11:30 p.m. and has remained in the Atlantic County jail since his arrest, Housel said.

Johns faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the robberies, five years on each of the weapons offenses and 18 months for each of the aggravated assault convictions. The remaining counts, including theft, conspiracy and additional firearms counts, will be merged for the purpose of sentencing, Levy said.

Superior Court Judge James Isman is scheduled to sentence Johns July 18.
