Downbeach Memorial Day services to honor fallen heroes
Monday, May 26 is the day the nation sets aside to honor our fallen heroes. Locally the day will be observed with parades and solemn ceremonies dedicated to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country.
Ventnor
There will be a memorial service 10 a.m. Monday at the flagpole near the entrance to the Police Department on Cambridge Avenue outside Ventnor City Hall. At 11 a.m. there will be a memorial service at the Turner-Bunting-Durkin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3361 at 601 Dorsett Ave.
Margate
The lineup for the parade at Union Avenue School will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The parade will step off at 10 a.m., proceed from the Union Avenue School down Union Avenue and onto Ventnor Avenue, and down the parkway to the All Wars Memorial for a ceremony. New this year, after the ceremony, the parade will march back up Ventnor Avenue and Union Avenue to the police station on Decatur Avenue for a small carnival, where bike and stroller decorations will be judged.
Longport
Memorial Day events begin at 11 a.m. with a parade starting at 33rd and Atlantic avenues. The parade will include American Legion Post 469, dignitaries, the Atlantic City High School Band, the Longport Beach Patrol, Sea Cadets, the Longport Volunteer Fire Department, Ventnor Cub Scout Pack 275 and anyone who wishes to march, decorate and ride a bike, or push a stroller. They will be followed by a decorated motorcycle brigade.
The parade will head to the John Kuzmann Memorial at the foot of the Longport Bridge, where Army Brig. Gen. Guy Sands-Pingot will speak. The parade will then proceed to Borough Hall for a ceremony on the water honoring those lost at sea. After the ceremony the police will judge and award prizes to the best-decorated bikes in the parade. Events culminate with a hot dog barbecue behind Borough Hall.
