Crews restoring power following storm
Utility crews continued to restore service to Atlantic City Electric customers Tuesday after heavy wind and rain swept through the region late Sunday evening and persisted throughout the day Monday.
As many as 16,000 Atlantic County customers lost power as wind gusts of up to 40 mph blew down power lines and trees that were left unstable by saturating rains.
As of Tuesday morning, 7,824 Atlantic County customers were still without electricity with fresh reports coming in as some residents were making it back to their homes behind receding flood waters, according to Sandra J. May, Atlantic City Electric spokeswoman.
Hardest hit were the barrier islands, although some Mainland area customers were also affected, May said.
Crews worked through the night Monday to restore service as quickly as possible while additional crews were called in from other areas to assist in the restoration.
With improved weather Tuesday, Atlantic City Electric expected to make significant progress with the aim of restoring as many customers as possible by late Tuesday evening. The company expects to have nearly all customers back in service by late Wednesday. Although because of the extent of the damage there may be some instances where individual or small groups of customers may not be restored until Thursday, May said.
Atlantic City Electric reminds the public that if they see a downed line, assume that it is energized and extremely dangerous. They should not touch the line, but should stay clear and report it to Atlantic City Electric by calling (800) 833-7476.
Atlantic City Electric is a public utility owned by Pepco Holdings, Inc. It provides electric delivery services to more than 540,000 customers in southern New Jersey.
