Coastal flood warning in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday

A strong onshore flow is expected to cause widespread minor tidal flooding on the ocean front and the adjacent back bays around the time of high tide today (Monday, May 12) and again tonight, according to the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management. Moderate tidal flooding could occur.

The following are times of high tide and water level forecasts (measured against Mean Lower Low Water, which is the lowest daily tide level averaged over a 19-year period):

At Atlantic City, Steel Pier, the next high tide will occur at 2:43 p.m. today with a forecast near 7.5 feet above mllw. High tide is again at 2:56 a.m. Tuesday with a forecast around 7.5 feet above mllw and 3:44 p.m. Tuesday with a height of 7.0 feet above mllw. This tide is predicted to be higher than this morning's high tide.

This type of storm is not common for the month of May, according to the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management statement, and can cause inconveniences for commuters traveling to and from the barrier islands during the times of high tide.

Some heavy rainfall will occur along with strong winds, adding to the stormy conditions at the shore. The storm is expected to lessen in intensity this afternoon and evening.

A coastal flood warning means that flooding is imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water and take appropriate action to protect life and property.

Remember to move your vehicle to higher ground at the times of high tide.
