Absecon man wielding steak knife subdued by police
ABSECON – A 36-year-old resident was arrested Tuesday night after he came after police officers with a kitchen knife.
Absecon police responded to a report of an assault shortly after 5 p.m. at Oyster Bay Condominiums off California Avenue to find Jeffrey Sleeth, 51, bleeding from the top of his head, Sgt. Robert Henchy said. The victim told police he was attacked by his roommate, Joseph Moran.
Entering the apartment, Henchy and Officers Robert Ponzetti and James Laughlin found Moran armed with a steak knife and refusing orders to put it down, according to reports.
“He refused and came toward the officers,” Henchy said. “The officers were able to disarm the suspect after a brief struggle. The officers were able to arrest the defendant without using deadly force.”
Police Chief Charles Smith said Wednesday, April 30 that the victim had blood all over his face when police arrived.
Sleeth was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland campus, where he was transferred to the hospital’s trauma care unit in Atlantic City, according to Smith.
Moran was charged with aggravated assault on the victim and police, possession of an unlawful weapon, possession of a weapon and resisting arrest, the chief said. He was transferred to the Atlantic County jail in Mays Landing.
