HAMILTON TWP— Arizona Sen. John McCain was the clear winner Saturday morning as Atlantic County Republican Committee members filled the Cologne Fire Hall in Hamilton Township where they took a presidential primary straw vote.
McCain garnered 34 votes, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was second with 14, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was third with 10 votes, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had 7 votes, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul had 2 votes.
Each of the five presidential candidate camps had representatives to give an overview of their candidate and their views heading into the Feb. 5 "Super Tuesday" primary election here in New Jersey.
Every municipality in Atlantic County had at least some members of their county committee present at the breakfast/straw vote event.
"The turnout here this morning is really great," said state Sen. Bill Baroni of Middlesex and Mercer counties. "This indicates how excited we are in New Jersey to have a chance to have a voice in this election."
Baroni was there Saturday morning to represent his candidate John McCain.
