EHT family escapes fire

An Egg Harbor Township family escaped injury when a fire broke out in their Heggen Avenue home in the Cardiff section just before 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. More than 20 firefighters from Cardiff and Bargaintown responded, quickly knocking down smoke and flames which fire officials on the scene said came from a bedroom. One resident, Sidney Martin, said she was in the house when she saw smoke coming from the bedroom. She said her 13-year-old grandson and her daughter were outside at the time in the pool. She said they got out of the house and used a cell phone to call 911. Fire Investigator Don Stauffer was on the scene and details about the cause were incomplete at the time. The residence is located near the intersection of Madison and Mt. Vernon avenues and bordered by English Creek Avenue and the Black Horse Pike in Cardiff.
