SOMERS POINT – Mayor Dan Reilly is resigning as a candidate for mayor in the November election. He presented his formal resignation to the Republican Organization Monday, July 2.
Reilly, who won the party’s bid in the primary running unopposed, will complete his current term but has chosen not to run for re-election. His term expires Dec. 31.
City Councilman Jack Glasser, who is on the ballot for re-election to his 2nd Ward council seat, has been named by the Republican Organization to take Reilly’s place in the mayoral election. This leaves Glasser’s council seat up for grabs.
Anyone interested in running for the City Council seat on the Republican ticket may submit a letter of interest to the Republican Organization no later than July 20. All interested parties will be considered, according to Jeanne Carlson, club president.
Carlson said Reilly gave no specific reason for his decision to relinquish his candidacy.
Contacted Tuesday, Glasser said he was honored to be the Republican candidate for mayor and looks forward to running in the election.
“The mayor is a goodwill ambassador for the town, and I want to do what is right for Somers Point,” he said.
“I have a history of community service in addition to service to my country in the military and my church. I would like to carry on this tradition of service and do well for the town.”
Glasser will face Democratic candidate John DiMaria in November.
Reilly was unable to be reached for comment.
